National Lottery creates 158 millionaires

Despite the economic downturn, it seems that more and more people in the UK are turning to the National Lottery in a bid to change their fortunes. Figures have just been released that reveal that the National Lottery created 158 millionaires in 2010 which is 26 more than in 2009. It could mean that UK lottery players were just extra lucky this year and of course, the fact that EuroMillions also offers UK players another chance to win a million each week with the Millionaire Raffle is also a factor.

The figures released by the National Lottery are very impressive with more than £775 million being paid out in jackpot prizes. This is a record breaking £285 million increase on the previous year and not the only record broken in the UK where the lottery is concerned.
We saw a landmark record broken in February when Nigel and Justine Paige scooped a massive £56 million EuroMillions win, making them the biggest jackpot winners in the UK. This record breaking win was then superseded by another of £84 million in May and then again in October with a £113 million jackpot win. Both the May and October winners opted to remain anonymous so we have no details of these lucky winners.
Another National Lottery record breaking figure came in October when the highest number of millionaire winners of 19 in a single month was recorded. However, the National Lottery saw the highest amount of prize money paid out in a single month in October with a staggering figure of more than £168 million.
What is likely to have had the biggest effect on the number of millionaires created by the National Lottery in 2010 is the special Millionaire Raffle which was held on Christmas Eve. The National Lottery created a further 25 one million winners from this raffle but so far only 15 have come forward to claim their wins.
